Hire Vintage SONOR Jazz Drum Kit from the 1920s
A few years ago, I happened to come across a complete SONOR jazz drum kit from the 1920s. Naturally, time had left its mark, but whenever I could spare the time, I dedicated myself to restoring this extraordinary instrument, eventually bringing it back to a condition that is virtually like new and faithful to the original.
Some hardware components were re-nickeled, and the bass drum shell was re-stained and lacquered. The accessory table - or ‘trap table’ (the origin of the term ‘trap set’ for such drum kits) - was also given a new felt covering, as a matter of course. Furthermore, both the bass drum and the snare were fitted with new calfskin heads, mounted onto the original wooden flesh hoops.
The core of the kit appears to be the ‘Strand’ jazz drum set listed in the 1927 SONOR catalogue. The accessory table and the cream-white tom originated in Markneukirchen and were manufactured by the Max Schimmel company.
The drum kit is fully functional, though today it is likely of greater interest for exhibitions or as a prop than for practical use by drummers.
