Lion’s Roar DIY Kit
A lion’s roar is certainly not a ‘must have’ for percussionists or orchestras. For those who are reluctant to purchase a complete lion’s roar, this DIY set offers a cheap alternative. With this set you can temporarily transform your existing tom, floor tom or even your bass drum into a lion’s roar. Besides acquiring the kit, you only have to sacrifice one head. The kit consists of the following components:
- Approx. 165 cm long and approx. 3.5 mm strong gut string with safety ball
- The leather cuff can be easily opened by its two press studs to apply the inner rosin coating
- Two self-adhesive reinforcing discs, rosin powder, sponge, nail for perforating the head

While looking for a solution to the part with two lions roaring in Péter Eötvös’ concert ‘Speaking Drums’, I came across Tom Rönnefarth’s set and I was completely thrilled! Assembly was very easy and the result is exactly what I wanted, if not better. Eötvös requires a low and a high roar, both could be implemented optimally, a sonorous bassy sound on the one hand and a significantly higher, screaming one on the other. Both respond without any problems and a large dynamic range is possible! Thanks Tom!!!
